The Junior Docent Program at the Dacotah Prairie Museum marked its 32nd year with another season of growth, learning, and community engagement. The annual initiative, which introduces Aberdeen Roncalli sixth-grade students to the world of history, art, and public speaking, continued its tradition of excellence. The program was originated in 1993 during Catholic Education Week and has been a wonderful experience for these students ever since.

The program kicked off in January, allowing each participating student to select their favorite museum exhibit. Students immersed themselves in research, honed their presentation skills, and eventually showcased their knowledge through presentations attended by parents, friends, family, and teachers. Both sets of tours saw strong attendance, with Junior Docents receiving praise for their mastery of the material and impressive public speaking abilities.

Throughout the school year, students also played a vital role in hands-on learning activities, demonstrating Native American and Pioneer toys to their peers. Each docent had the opportunity to participate once a month, further developing their confidence and teaching skills.
.
One of the highlights of the spring was the students’ involvement in the “Morning and Afternoons into the Past” event in May. Junior Docents rolled up their sleeves to demonstrate historic chores such as washing clothes in a vintage washtub with a laundry board and weaving on a two-harness loom. As a special reward for their hard work, each student received a container of freshly made butter to share with their families.

Dacotah Prairie Museum staff express pride in the Junior Docents, both past and present, these experiences help shape well-rounded, culturally aware adults. Through their dedication, the students continue to inspire a love of history, art, and culture in the next generation.
