Camps for All: Opening Doors to Summer Learning

At the Dacotah Prairie Museum, summer is more than just a season, it’s an opportunity to spark curiosity, creativity, and connection. Our Camps for All initiative ensures that every child has access to meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that bring history and art to life.

Each year, nearly 250 students participate in our popular Art Camp and History Camp programs, held at historic Centennial Village at the Brown County Fairgrounds. These camps are designed for youth ages 8 to 14 and offer an engaging mix of education and fun.

In Art Camp, students explore their creativity under the guidance of professional artist Lora Schaunaman. Through drawing, painting, and daily project experimentation, campers build artistic skills while discovering new ways to express themselves. Meanwhile, History Camp immerses participants in pioneer life, where they take part in hands-on activities like traditional crafts, old-fashioned chores, games, and even a one-room schoolhouse experience.

Affordability is central to our mission. Camps are offered at just $15 per day, including supplies and snacks, so families can participate without financial barriers. But keeping these programs accessible requires community support.

That’s where Camps for All makes a difference.

Gifts of all sizes directly impact a child’s experience:

  • $45 provides one child with access to History Camp
  • $120 supports two siblings attending Art Camp
  • $200 helps cover supplies and snacks for an entire week

This year, a generous donor has stepped forward with a $500 matching challenge, meaning every dollar given will be doubled once we reach that goal. It’s a powerful opportunity to expand access and ensure no child misses out.

Your support helps open doors—to discovery, confidence, and lifelong memories. Together, we are building the next generation of historians, artists, and community leaders.
